File Retailer Day: How did this monitor come to be?
Roberta Flack: I used to be very concerned within the Civil Rights Motion. On my Quiet Fireplace album, I wrote a music with Reverend Jesse Jackson referred to as “Go Up Moses.” The day(s) that we recorded that monitor, my band, Ron Carter, Richard Tee, Terry Plumeri, Hugh McCracken, Chuck Rainey—we have been so impressed by Marvin’s music. We have been improvising and riffing within the studio with one another. I’m so glad that the engineer recorded what occurred that day.
File Retailer Day: How do you’re feeling about “What’s Going On” and its message 50 years later?
Roberta Flack: Marvin (Gaye) and Obie (Benson) wrote this music in 1971 about police brutality that they witnessed. Fifty years later, we’re nonetheless battling police brutality. The music was and is about injustice, battle and that what connects us is stronger than what divides us. I really feel so unhappy about its continued relevance.
File Retailer Day: What are your ideas on new artists sampling your music and celebrating you as a cultural icon?
Roberta Flack: I’m honored that the youngsters connect with artists like me. Music crosses all borders, languages, ages, and religions. Because the common language, music speaks to us by our emotions. I like listening to how they combine my tracks in methods I might by no means have imagined on the time I recorded them.
